Stratford is a middle ring suburb that is growing in popularity. It is located 6 kilometres from the CBD, on the northern slopes of Lumley Hill, and to the west of the airport. The Barron River is located to the north of the suburb. Stratford is a Character listed area. Here you will find a good selection of Architecture of the original Queenslander Homes. The suburb is divided into north and south by Stratford Parade (Kamerunga Road) and the railway line, with industrial and sporting activities concentrated on the northern side of the suburb and residential and retail (commercial) activities on the southern side. A boat yard and boat ramp is also located on this northern side and is accessed by the broader Cairns community. Stratford is about 15mins drive north of Cairns CBD and about 5mins drive from the airport.
The population of Stratford is changing in its nature, but is restricted in terms of numbers by the lack of land available in the area for future development. Stratford has a casual, ‘village’ atmosphere with the population being made up of creative professionals and families. Due to the restricted amount of space, Stratford is a sought after suburb. There are some modern apartment blocks but the majority of the housing is Queenslander-style, older housing, much of which has been renovated.
Stratford has a hotel and a number of restaurants and a range of community spaces and facilities, including parks and a library. There is also a post office and a community hall. The nearest swimming pool is the Tobruk Memorial Pool about 8mins drive south of Stratford. St Augustine’s Catholic Church offers mass twice a week. There is a soccer park and sports clubhouse on the northern edge of the suburb (other side of the railway line), as well as a bowls club, and the adjoining suburb of Aeroglen offers a wide range of sport and recreational opportunities, including a community hall, and district level playing field.
The Stratford community hub includes a general practitioner and a pharmacy. The nearest hospital is in Cairns city about 15mins drive south. Cairns city offers the full complement of medical, dental and pathology services in the CBD.
The shopping hub at Stratford includes a butcher, a convenience store, a newsagent, a hair salon and a beauty salon. There is also a St Vinnie’s Second Hand Store. The closest major shopping centre is at Smithfield Shopping Centre, about 10mins drive north. Cairns Central Shopping Centre is 15mins drive south. There is a smaller shopping centre in the adjacent suburb of Redlynch.
There are no child care centres in Stratford; the closest is at Aeroglen, about 3mins drive away. The surrounding suburbs of Freshwater, Brinsmead and Cairns North have a number of child care centres.
There are no schools in Stratford, but the Freshwater Primary School is about 5mins drive west. The adjacent suburbs of Redlynch and Brinsmead offer a number of schooling options including a Catholic college (Prep-12) and Redlynch State Middle School and Primary. There are also a two Christian schools.
Sunbus services this area and taxis are also available. The railway line is only used for freight and tourist trains (the Kuranda Train), and there are no railway stations.
