Redlynch is an outer western suburb of Cairns that is growing rapidly. It stretches behind Freshwater and Bayview Heights, adjoining the Barron Gorge and Lamb Range. It is characterised by separate houses on larger blocks, and some remaining rural activities. There are a large number of housing developments in Redlynch designed for first-homebuyers. Redlynch is about 22mins drive north-west of Cairns CBD.
Redlynch has a population which includes many young families. There is also an older population due to the two retirement villages in the suburb and some older family homes.
Redlynch has a number of community facilities and services, including local level recreation facilities including an Equestrian Reserve and the Redlynch Village. Council are proposing to develop a district-level park caters to young people’s needs. There is a community hall and a skate park in the suburb. The nearest library is the Stratford library, about 8mins drive away, and the closest public pool is the Tobruk Memorial Pool, about 17mins drive east.
There is a medical clinic in Redlynch and a number of general practitioners. The full complement of Cairns city medical, dental and pathology services are about 20mins drive from Redlynch. The nearest hospitals are Cairns Base Hospital and Cairns Private Hospital about 19mins drive north-west.
Redlynch has a small shopping centre with a supermarket, bakery, chemist and newsagent. There are various takeaway food outlets and other small convenience stores in the area. The closest major shopping centre is Smithfield Shopping Centre about 13mins drive north. The Cairns Central Shopping Centre, about 24mins drive east.
The nearest child care centres are in the adjacent suburbs of Brinsmead about 5mins drive east and Freshwater about 5mins drive north.
St Andrew’s Catholic College (Prep-12) is currently developing a district level sports facility in partnership with the Cairns City Council for Redlynch. This facility will eventually have an Olympic swimming pool, a mountain bike track and other sports grounds. There is also a recently built state primary and state middle school in the suburb. The nearby suburbs of Freshwater and Brinsmead have primary schools and a Christian college.
