Cairns North is a coastal suburb of Cairns in the Cairns Region, Queensland, Australia. In the 2016 census, Cairns North had a population of 5,191 people. Cairns North is bounded by the Cairns Airport to the North, the Coral Sea to the East and Lily Creek to the West. As the name suggests, it is immediately north of the Cairns central business district. Highway 1 (part of the main route around the Australian coast) passes through the suburb on Sheridan Street. It is a central area of the local government area. The area is highly urbanised in nature, although its eastern edge is mangroves and coastline. The area has a mixture of land uses and activities, including commerce, residential housing, recreation, natural environment, and light industry. The Cairns International Airport is situated in Cairns North. Cairns North is about 6mins drive north of Cairns CBD.
The population of Cairns North is quite large, in the 2016 Census, Cairns North had a population of 5191 people. The area also has a significant amount of tourist accommodation.
Cairns North has a full range of various medical & dental services including pathologists, x-ray & scanning services, 24 hour medical clinics, plastic surgeons and womens health services. There are also specialist medical practitioners. There are two major hospitals, Cairns Base Hospital and Cairns Private Hospital as well as several day surgery outlets. The medical facilities overlap with Cairns City.
Cairns North has several community services and facilities within its boundaries. This includes several sportsgrounds and facilities (North Cairns Sports Reserve, tennis courts), and many parklands including Apex Park. Tobruk Memorial Swimming Pool is in this area as well as Cairns Hockey Association. The Cairns City Library is about 5mins south of Cairns North. The Cairns Esplanade public space and boardwalk includes a children’s playground, a children’s water park and a skate park. All are within walking distance of the city centre.
Cairns North has several grocery stores, a late-night convenience store and outlets for fish and takeaway food. There is also a chemist. Cairns city facilities are about 5mins drive south of Cairns North including a major shopping centre, Cairns Central Shopping Centre, with outlets for Myer, Target, Coles, major Telco’s, and specialty shops. Located on the Cairns Esplanade is The Pier is another major shopping centre with luxury fashion, five-star eateries, a bookshop, and the Shangri-la Hotel. There are high fashion stores, major duty-free stores, restaurants & cafés, chemists and hotels in the city centre.
There is a Goodstart Early Learning Centre in Cairns North but the surrounding suburbs offer plenty of options..
Cairns North falls under the Edge Hill state School Catchment Area though there are no High Schools in the direct catchment. Cairns State School would be the closest High School, being located in the city.
Sunbus has a central public transport hub in Lake Street, and the inter-state railway station is at the bottom of Cairns Central, at the end of Spence Street in Cairns City which is about 5mins south of Cairns North. There are also a number of touring bus companies and an airport bus service. Taxis are available in the suburb.
